A Brief History of Old Plateau Cemetery

The land which the old cemetery is located on, was thick woods, and owned by an old famous African, named Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis, born circa 1847, Dahomey Africa (New Benin), died 1935, Plateau, Alabama (Africa USA). He was the last survivor of the slave ship "Clotilde", 1860. Well as history goes, there was a large family of Singletons, who purchased some land from Cudjoe, which was located in Magazine Point, just a small distance from Plateau. They purchased the land for a family plot, for the Singleton family, in about 1876. This section was located right on the corner of Old Baybridge Road, when pass this way today. It is all over grown with bushes and trees, and filled with unmarked graves of Singleton relatives. Some maybe marked, but from my last visit, it was so thick, I could not see a thing. A few years ago, it was all cleaned out, and you could see some headstones, and old faded flowers, but as of October 2001, you could not see them. My great grandfather, Frank Singleton, Sr is there somewhere, along with hundreds of family members. As time went on, other citizens of Plateau and Magazine Point, began burying their loved ones there, and then it got out of hand, to the point, no one wanted to care for it anymore. Not long ago, they came up with a solution to as, if you were residents of Plateau and Magazine Point, you were allowed to be buried there. Today there are many family, friends and neighbors, resting there, including my grandparents, cousins, uncles, aunts and other family that passed through life. I tried to do a survey of the place, which did not work out too well. The time of the year was off, and I ran into standing water, and some kind of black snakes, which made me leave. I did run into a living ledgend, who goes by the name of "Mr. Hubbard", who once owned a famous store called "Hubbards' Store". Believe me when I say that this is the most handsom and niecest man in the world. He is 93 years young, and don't look a day over 60. He pointed out a lot of things, that had gone unseen by me and my dad, who had acompanied me. His mind was as sharp as a tack, and he walked as if he was in his 20s, which I am proud to say, he walked better than me. He is related to the Singleton family one way or another, and knew most of all the family members, including my grandmother, who passed away October 4, 2001. He was at the survice, and also belonged to the same church as she. He pointed out a tall monument, in honor of Cudjoe Lewis, and from this one visit to this cemetery, I learned a whole lifetime of knowledge, which I am glad to share. I visit this cemetery as often as I visit Mobile, due to my grandfather, Enoch Benjamin, Sr., being buried there. As I learn more, I will add it to this section. I am just so very pleased that I got a chance to see and learn more about this place, not really knowing the history of it. I was also told that Cudjoe Lewis owned most of that land all around the cemetery, and across the road from it, while the Singleton family, owned most of Plateau in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The land is now owned by different individuals, and like other things in the world, it has become a money issue.
